SharePoint Upgrade Process Overview

Two upgrade approaches are available for upgrading from Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 to Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 which are (i) In-place upgrade and (ii) Database attach upgrade. In-place upgrade lets you move all the Microsoft SharePoint sites on the same hardware but the database approach lets you move your content to a new farm or a desperate hardware. In addition, you may reduce downtime by merging up the In-place and database-attach upgrade.

In place upgrade enables you to install SharePoint Server 2010 on the same hardware, preserves your farm settings and makes customizations available after the upgrade. During the In-place upgrade, websites are available after the upgrade process whereas, in database attach upgrade, you will be allowed to upgrade content on a separate farm but you will not be able to upgrade any of the farm settings. You may upgrade multiple databases at the same time or upgrade them in any order that you want. This approach lets you combine several farms into a single farm. The database-attach approach is beneficial if you want to change your hardware or need to reconfigure your existing server farm topology during the upgrade process. With this approach, you detach the databases in your old farm and while you attach them to a new farm, the upgrade process runs and upgrades the entire database. This process is performed manually in a separate environment.

Plan your Upgrade Process

• In-place upgrade
The in-place upgrade is performed on the same hardware as your previous version installation. With this upgrade approach, you will be able to upgrade the complete installation in the following order.

• Run the Setup
As soon as the in-place upgrade process begins, the server administrator carries out the pre-upgrade checks, runs Setup for SharePoint Server 2010 on the server which runs the SharePoint Central Administration Website. As, the previous version has already been installed, the system selects the in-place upgrade automatically. After running the Setup on the server which hosts the Central Administration Web Site, the Server administrator can run the Setup on the Web servers and application servers in the farm.

• Run the SharePoint Configuration Wizard
SharePoint Configuration wizard is run on the server that hosts the Central Administration website. This upgrade approach allows the server, configuration database, services and the content databases to be upgraded sequentially. As soon as the configuration wizard finishes, the Central Administration Website opens. For the upgrade process to run for each site collection, it is allocated a particular timer job which is scheduled. Each site collection is upgraded with the upgrade process timer job and upgrades all the sites until the upgrade process completes.

• Run the Configuration Wizard on all the Server farms
Server administrator ensures and runs the configuration wizard on all the servers in the farm and confirms whether the upgrade has been performed successfully. Respective site owner or administrator can preview sites in the Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 look in case of Visual Upgrade, or when the site owner is ready, he/she can finish the change to the SharePoint Server 2010 look.

Database attach Upgrade
You can move to a new farm or hardware with database attach approach. You will detach all content databases from a current farm and attach them to a new server farm installation. While attaching the databases to a new farm, your upgrade process runs to upgrade the data in-place.

• Set Up and Configure a new Server Farm
With database attach upgrade, the server administrator sets up and makes up a new SharePoint Server 2010 farm and transfers all customizations to the new farm. The new environment is also tested by the server administrator. With this approach, you will be upgrading the content of your environment but not the configuration settings.

• Detach the old content databases from the old farm and attach them to the new farm
Server administrator can detach the content databases from the old Office SharePoint Server 2007 farm and turns all the services and components on each server computer in the farm. The old farm is made offline by changing the load balancer or IIS Web applications to avoid service requests. Content databases are attached to the new farm and content is upgraded by the server administrator. Once the server administrator authenticates the completion of upgrade, then he/she resumes by configuring the new farm to begin serving the request to the new URL.

Hybrid Approach 1 for Read-only Databases
You can provide a read only access for the data to the users while you are attempting the upgrade process. Actually, the content databases in the original farm are set to read-only mode. Replicas of databases are also upgraded on the new farm.

• Configure a new SharePoint Server 2010 farm
Server administrator sets up your new SharePoint Server 2010 farm and transfers all customizations to the new farm while testing the environment.

• Change the content database to Read only
After changing the content databases to read-only, the administrator makes use of SQL Server to back up the content databases residing on the Office SharePoint Server 2007 farm and restore them to the new farm.

• Attach new content databases to the new farm
New copies of content databases are attached and the upgrade process is executed by the server administrators which simultaneously upgrades the content. Once the upgrade process is complete, it is verified by the server administrators. New farm is configured by the server administrator so that it would start serving the requests at the new URL. The original farm is also taken offline.

Hybrid approach 2 for detach databases
Speed up your upgrade process by detaching and attaching databases to upgrade several databases at once with Hybrid approach 2. Although, it is an in place upgrade as you are upgrading the original farm but you can also use the other farm to carry out the upgrade and then attach the upgraded databases to the original farm. The original farm will not be able to serve requests during upgrade.

• Take the original farm offline
During the in-place upgrade with detached databases, the server administrator will take the original farm offline to stop service requests.

• Detach content database and run an in-place upgrade on the original farm
Server administrator will detach the content databases from the original farm and runs an in-place upgrade on the original farm servers, services and configuration database. After, this process, the content databases are attached to the original farm and the content is upgraded.

• Using a temporary small farm to run the upgrade
If you are using a small and different temporary farm for carrying out the upgrade process then you need to attach the upgraded databases to the original farm.

During an in-place upgrade with detached databases, the server administrator sets up a temporary and small farm which is currently running the new version. He/she takes the original farm offline and detaches the content database from the original farm. Once these are done, an in-place upgrade is run-on the original farm in order to upgrade the server, services along with configuration database. Afterwards, content databases are attached to the temporary farm and a parallel upgrade is performed. Content databases are reattached to the original farm and upgrade is confirmed by the administrator. The server administrator previews the sites in the Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 look, if Visual upgrade is used and completes the change to the Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 look.

Summary:

Carrying out your upgrade with in place or database attach approach can be both beneficial but all depending upon your business requirements. In-place approach can be beneficial as it preserves all your farm settings with the SharePoint Server 2010 installation. You don’t have to configure the farm settings manually. Your content databases will be upgraded sequentially. With database attach approach; you need to set up a new environment to host your SharePoint 2010 Server. Once your new setup is up and running, the old environment will be made offline and all content databases will be moved to newer locations and upgraded at the same time. With database attach upgrade approach; you will be successful in minimizing the down time as you will be upgrading several databases at once. Hybrid approaches including in-place upgrade with detached databases or database attach upgrade with read only databases help in decreasing the downtime of your environment and the end users will not experience prolonged time of interruption of services.

Determine SharePoint 2010 Upgrade Approach

Posted by admin on Jun 8, 2011 in Microsoft SharePoint
Like Us on Facebook or Google Thanks

In-place and database attach upgrade are two basic approaches that need to be selected to upgrade from Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 to Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010.Planning the right upgrade approach which is suitable for your organization carries a lot of importance. These methods of upgrade have their pros and cons with concern for downtime and hardware costs etc. Generally, downtime is needed to be minimized during an upgrade but in actual, several parameters affect the downtime; all depending upon the upgrade model chosen, performance of server, farm size and databases.

Upgrade Approaches

In-place upgrade approach is quite simple as you can install SharePoint 2010 on the same machine. This approach enables you to upgrade the server farm settings along with the content in a single process. With in-place upgrade approach, farm wide settings are preserved and customizations are available after the upgrade but servers and farms are offline during the process.
With database attach upgrade approach; you can upgrade the content on a separate server farm. This is a faster upgrade process. Farm settings are not upgraded so you have to transfer settings and customizations manually in order migrate from the old farm. The foremost pulling factor of database attach upgrade approach is that you may merge several server farms in one server. You can upgrade several databases at the same time in any order.

Improving Upgrade Performance

In order to improve the upgrade performance and reduce downtime, certain mitigation techniques may be applied to achieve an optimal upgrade.

With parallel upgrade, you can speed up your upgrade process by attaching and upgrading multiple databases at the same time. The processing time and number of parallel upgrades rely upon the hardware.Parallel upgrade is a manual process and involves additional steps with monitoring.

Another useful method is the Hybrid technique which can be divided into Hybrid plan 1 and Hybrid plan 2.In Hybrid plan 1: Content will be provided a read only access during upgrade and the databases shall be set to read only mode while the upgrade is running on the other farm. You will reduce half of your processing time for users. In this approach, the existing farm keeps on hosting the non-upgraded sites in read only mode while the content is being upgraded. Server and farm shall not be upgraded and you need to transfer settings and customizations which you want to preserve. In case of Hybrid plan 2, Benefit from in-place’s upgrade capability to upgrade content and settings while enjoying the speed of database attach upgrade model.Hybrid plan 2 involves the usage of in place upgrade for upgrading the farms and settings and to detach and upgrade several databases in parallel.Upgrade makes your customizations available after the upgrade process. This plan allows multiple content databases to be upgraded at the same time.

Upgrade Scenarios

Upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit SQL Server

In order to obtain the best performance results, it is a must to migrate from 32-bit edition to a 64-bit edition. It is recommended to perform one type of upgrade at a time to avoid a failure. You may use two methods for a 32-bit to a 64 bit SQL Server upgrade. Either you may back up all the farm database sets perform the upgrade and restore the databases after wards. In this case, you will have a full back up and once you restore the databases, no change would be required within SharePoint 2010. Other than this method, you can always move the databases to a 64 bit SQL Server edition. With a different 64 – bit edition, you need to run a command to the computers which are running SharePoint Server 2010 in order to point them to the 64 bit SQL Server edition.

Upgrade from 32-bit OS to 64 bit OS

For an upgrade, you need to migrate from a 32 bit operating system to a 64 bit operating system. Adding 64 bit servers to the server farm and removal of 32 bit servers mitigate the service down time.

Upgrade a form based authentication environment

Once the migration is complete from SharePoint 2007 to SharePoint 2010, the authentication system is converted to a Windows Login based authentication. For SharePoint environments, where Windows based authentication exists, no new changes are required and web application will also work smoothly.Additional configuration changes will be required if your web applications are using the form based authentication. For using SharePoint 2007 based web applications in SharePoint 2010, it is important to convert to claims based authentication. After this conversion, web application zones must be configured to form based authentication. You will be able to migrate users and permissions from SharePoint 2007 to SharePoint 2010.

Upgrade large databases

Databases having greater number or size of document versions take more time to upgrade as compared to smaller ones. The density of data determines the actual time required to upgrade it but not the database size. The upgrade process usually times out due to connection issues.

Upgrade databases having multiple site collections

It is recommended to break up large site collections in a database into multiple databases. A default warning at 9,000 site collections and a hard limit at 15000 site collections is offered in Office SharePoint 2007 but these values are converted to 2000 site collections and 5000 site collections in SharePoint 2010. You can always fasten up your upgrade process by performing paralleled upgrade for multiple databases.

Upgrade from Windows SharePoint Services 3.0

You can attach and upgrade the content databases from Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 to SharePoint 2010 by using a database attach upgrade approach. You will be able to upgrade the data in the content database with this process but cannot transfer any farm settings.

Upgrade Microsoft Office forms server 2007 to SharePoint 2010

Due to the unavailability of Office Forms Server 2007 for buying, its capabilities have been incorporated into SharePoint Server 2010. For using forms, you need to upgrade to SharePoint 2010 by adopting the database attach upgrade approach.

Change Languages for site or environment

For changing the language for a particular site, you need to upgrade in the same language and afterwards install new language pack for changing to that language. But if, you need to change the installation language for servers, you need to use the database migration approach for migrating your data from the old version and language to a new one.

Use Internationalized Domain names

It is recommended to delete the configurations and related settings of IDN’s in the existing SharePoint server 2007 before migrating to SharePoint 2010.

Best SharePoint Upgrade Practices

Posted by admin on Jun 8, 2011 in Microsoft SharePoint
Like Us on Facebook or Google Thanks

Before planning a SharePoint Upgrade, certain key points carry importance for a successful implementation. First of all, detecting possible issues about the deployment is of core importance in order to meet the upgrade schedule, then how much an organization requires downtime for carrying out day to day operations or is there any need for upgrading farm or server configurations? In addition, sometimes customizations are also required on the SharePoint 2010 farm as well. In this regard, the under mentioned best practices if adopted precisely can lead to a smooth upgrade.

Run a Pre-Upgrade Check

Get the status of your SharePoint sites and servers before a SharePoint 2010 upgrade. Server administrator can solve any potential issues for upgrade with a Pre-Upgrade check. Pre-upgrade checker is available with Office SharePoint Server 2007 Service Pack 2(updated version) and October 2009 Cumulative Update for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 (updated version).

Is Your Environment Fully Functional?

As, upgrade does not resolve any issues that exist in your environment so it is recommended to un extend your web applications which are not being used in the Internet Information Services (IIS) beforehand because SharePoint 2010 will try to upgrade the application even if it does not exist which will result in an upgrade failure.

Update Servers to Service Pack 2

If you want to run an in-place or database-attach upgrade you must change your existing environment to Service Pack 2 of Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007.Pre-upgrade checker has been improved in the October 2009 Cumulative Update so it will be better to install for achieving a simplified upgrade.

Upgrade OS to 64-bit Servers

Migrate to 64-bit version of Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows Server 2008 with SP2 before trying an In-place upgrade. For SQL server users, they should migrate to 64-bit version of Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 and SQL Server 2008 with Service Pack 1 (SP1) with Cumulative Update 2. But if, you are using SQL Server 2005, then upgrade to SP3 and Cumulative Update 3. For carrying out an in-place upgrade, your existing system should be running on a supported OS. An important point to consider is not to merge your upgrade process with these operations.

Estimate the Storage Space and Time required for upgrade

You need 64-bit hardware and 64 bit versions of the Operating System as well as Microsoft SQL Server. Either for an in-place or database-attach upgrade process, you need to update to Office SharePoint Server 2007 Service Pack 2 to carry out the upgrade process. It is important to know the storage space required and the time needed for an upgrade process. Conducting a trial upgrade can help estimate the space and time required for any such upgrade.

Perform a Full Backup of the Farm

It is recommended to back up the Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 environment before commencing with the upgrade process. You should also back up all customizations if you have deployed them. You must test these backups so that you will be able to recover if there is some kind of hardware failure.

Make Your Environment Effectual

Query throttling on large lists and changes in limits of site collection per content database are some new changes that have been introduced in SharePoint Server 2010. The new limits on site collections include (5000 warning and 15000 limit to 2000 warning and 5000 limit. Office SharePoint Server 2007 environment must be optimized in order to meet these limits.

Add server to farms either before or after completing the upgrade process

The configuration database is upgraded when SharePoint Products Configuration is run. It contains the list of servers in a farm. Servers added to a farm after running the configuration wizard do not appear in the database so it is suggested to add servers to farms after or before running an upgrade.

Set Databases to READ ONLY mode

While adopting a database attach approach, you may set the original databases to a read only mode to enable users to continue to access their data in a read only form.

Review Upgrade Status page and Upgrade Logs

You can always deal with issues by looking at the Upgrade Status Page and Upgrade Logs. The Upgrade Page shows the details regarding the upgrade process while the upgrade log shows possible warnings or errors. After the completion of upgrade process make sure to test and verify all the sites.

Summary:

Upgrade’s best performance relies upon certain special measures and if these taken properly then you can definitely conduct a perfect upgrade without a failure. It is suggested to find out about possible issues that can occur during an upgrade with a pre-upgrade check. Similarly, you need to delete web applications which are not in use and the existing environment must be changed to Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 Service Pack 2.You need to upgrade your operating system to 64-bit server and also require information regarding the time required to complete an upgrade and about the storage space. You must backup all customizations and farms and optimize your environment to meet the limits set for new site collections. You may add servers to farms after or before the upgrade and observe the details regarding the upgrade process and any warnings. Planning before an upgrade is critically essential because it is the ultimate way of commencing a smooth upgrade.
