Craftmine.net: An Amazing Dedicated Minecraft Server Community
I was sitting around my apartment one quiet afternoon when my roommate came in and logged into a game that changed my view of indy games forever. An amazingly simple game called Minecraft, it is simply an experience that brings me back to my childhood. Minecraft reminds me of all the hours I spent as a kid building creations in my bedroom with sets of legos. Minecraft allows you to collect resources and create some amazing things out of simple cubes. Everything in Minecraft is a block, from the shape of your character to the ore that you spend endless hours searching for. After succombing to the peer-pressure of my roommate, I coughed up the €14.95 so I could try playing the game online. I was immediately satisfied, reverting to my childhood antics of base-building and digging deep holes in the ground. Minecraft was everything that I WISHED that I could have done as a kid! Created by a Sweedish indy programmer named Marcus Persson, the game is absolutely simple and fantastic! My recommendation is to try it out and you shouldn’t be dissapointed.
I learned about the in’s and out’s of the game through asking questions on my first online server. After weeks of playing and through my technical prowess as an I.T. Consultant, I decided to start my very own multiplayer server for minecraft. I first hosted the server on a box running Windows Server 2003 for about a month. I was impressed with Hey0′s mod for the game and decided to install it on the server along with numerous plugins that allowed my players more control over the game environment. After hitting thirty regular players on the server, I realized that the Windows box was not going to cut it. Especially since it only had 4 gigabytes of RAM and a 50mbps business-class connection to the internet. After a month of hassles with the Windows box, I moved the server to a Virtual Private Server running Debian and located at a datacenter in downtown Seattle, Washington. The server has quad-core processors, 8 gigabytes of RAM, and is directly connected to a gigabit fiber line that runs over multiple backbones, this reduced the server latency from 90 milliseconds to 25 milliseconds with no server lag! I decided to recruit a select few to assist in my daily root administration of the linux server. The server now runs hmod flawlessly, including backing up the world files and rendering a 2D map of the server world every day or on command. The server has now grown from a population of 30 users to a registered user population of over 300 users. Craftmine is now ranked in the top 10 minecraft servers in the world and continues to grow through the dedication and creativity of admins and players. Minecraft Gaming Communitygaming community
