FireFound is hands down the best security add-on for Firefox. We’ve seen a fair amount of similar tools for Windows users on a whole in the past (see our laptop thief-proofing guide for more details), but FireFound is the first Firefox-specific version we’ve seen, and it’s got some solid features of its own. FireFound is an extension for Firefox and Firefox for Mobile that uses the Geolocation API to send your machine’s location to a secure server. Every time your computer’s location changes, FireFound sends a secure message to a central server with its current location. You can then log into the server and see your computer’s current location.
All of the location data is encrypted, so no one can find out where your computer is without your password.
If you lose your computer, you can tell FireFound to clear your personal data (saved passwords, browsing history, etc.) if anyone starts your browser before you can retrieve it.
It comes as quite a relief that the Avast! anti virus support now fully renders help to 64-bit Windows platform. This has been enabled in the Avast! Home and Professional versions. This has been seen as a big stride by ALWIL Software as it had been closely watching the proceedings and following up on the whole issue of taking up this platform by Avast!. The Windows XP 64-bit version has an extensive range of supporting up to 32 GB of RAM and 16 TB of virtual memory. A lot of antivirus support software cannot usually support the 64-bit Windows because of its massive storage. The Windows 64-bit version can run applications at great speed when engaged to work with big data sets. These applications have the propensity to preload a lot more data into the virtual memory enabling quicker access by the 64-bit extensions of the processor. This minimizes the time taken to insert data into virtual memory and also in writing data storage devices. In this way, applications can run a lot quicker with greater control. Regular antivirus support applications in 32-bit versions of Windows do not run on the 64-bit Windows. This is because the 32-bit versions depend on the 32-bit kernel drivers. However, the Avast! anti virus support application changes this equation by running traditional 64-bit drivers and still deliver the best mode of protection and safety as achieved in the 32-bit Windows. Both the 32-bit and the 64-bit versions get installed in the same way.

Device Doctor is a freeware Windows application that scans your computer hardware and checks to see if there are new driver updates available for your devices. Device Doctor is a free download for Windows only. Device Doctor isn’t perfect yet, but as a completely free, portable application that you can toss on your thumb drive, it’s well worth a look. Device Doctor is available at the developer’s website.
Windows is not so good at finding driver updates and when users start migrating to Windows 7 finding the right driver will become quite a challenge. During our testing, we used the application on half a dozen PCs, and had varied results—on our XP test system, Device Doctor worked well and accurately found new drivers, but for Windows 7 we didn’t have as much luck, with a few incorrect drivers being thrown at us. That said, Windows 7 was only released recently, so expect that support to improve in the future. Windows driver update service is sloppy at best.
Drivers are an essential part of Windows, and you don’t want to go with the wrong ones. Using the utility, which can be installed or used as a portable application, is about as easy as it gets—just click the Begin Scan button, wait a couple of seconds, and you will be shown a list of drivers that can be updated.
