Don’t just expect people to read your blog. It takes a lot of time and effort to establish a popular blog. Don’t expect people to read your blog just because you posted it. You need to let them know about it, and then give them a reason to keep coming back. Just remember: self promotion is healthy, but obnoxious spamming is not! Commenting on the blog posts of others is good, but these comments should be more than just blatant attempts at getting people to click back to you. Engage other writers and readers with relevant commentary, and they’ll return the favor.

Don’t lecture readers. The real magic of blogging happens when people comment on what you have written. However, writing in a way that sounds like you are lecturing does not encourage people to comment. When you write, use your own voice and involve readers in your discussions. Don’t ignore the importance of headlines. Headlines are what catch people’s attention. If you want people to stop and read your blog, you need to create headlines that tell potential readers what they’re in for when they stop to read your posts. While catchy, quirky headlines might seem like the way to go, only do so if they support the main idea you’re trying to convey. It can be a tricky balance to strike, but a worthwhile one. You’ll learn what works and what doesn’t work for you.

Don’t blog without purpose. Even on a day when there doesn’t seem to be much much happening, and you’re just not that inspired to write about anything of consequence, there’s always something that you can write about. Don’t waste your readers’ time with posts that only tell them that you don’t have anything to say — find something to say!

Do update often! We see it happen all the time. Some of our favorite blogs of yesteryear just aren’t around anymore. Whether their authors only update every few months or so, stopped blogging altogether, or are no longer with us, we somehow got out of the habit of returning to their site. Don’t let yourself get numbered among these statistics — if you have a blog, commit to make it a habit for the long haul and your readers will be rewarded (and, in turn, reward you with their attention).
